Visegrad Eastern Partnership Literary Award
Visegrad Eastern Partnership Literary Award is initiated by the member states of the Visegrad Group (Poland, Hungary, Czekia, and Slovakia) and aims to highlight outstanding works of literature written by authors originating from Eastern Partnership countries. The mission of the VEaPLA project is to stimulate cooperation between intellectuals from the post-Soviet and the V4 countries space, to endorse important cultural personalities and to support the ideals of cultural freedom. One of the criterias of selection is the resonance and social impact of the respective books.
The winner of the VEaPLA Award for the year 2018 is the Ukrainian writer Vladimir Rafeenko for his book The Length of Days (Dolgota dnei/Dovgi casi) (Fabula Publishing House). The author is a Russian language prose writer and poet born in 1969 in the region of Donetsk. Licensee of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Donetsk He worked as editor at BAO and Cassiopeia Publishing Houses and as deputy-editor at Mnogotochie magazine. Winner of the Russian Award (2010, 2012) for Russian writers from the diaspora, and of the Novaya Slovesnosti Award (2014). After Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine in 2014, Vladimir Rafeenko found shelter in Western Ukraine.
The book The Length of Days includes a novel and a collection of short stories. The novel is a tale about war, while the short stories are written in a realistic manner. The author appears in the stories as one of their characters. The stories take place in the public bath The Fifth Rome, located in the outskirts of the city of Z. The main characters attract the visitors in order to murder them, intonating each morning the national anthem of Ukraine.
